Why would more than 170 people from around
the Annapolis area spend their cherished free time in countless
hours of rehearsal and performance time from August to May every
year? Ask any member of the Annapolis Chorale and you'll hear the
same answer: because they love to sing and are passionate about
sharing the joy and beauty of music with their friends, neighbors
and the town they love.
Unlike
other local musical organizations, the chorale's 170 members hail
from communities all around Anne Arundel County . Along with its
vast commitment to music, the Chorale also honors a mission to the
community by making annual appearances at public and private events
in churches, nursing homes and in rural areas.
This
tradition of giving began in 1989 with the Chorale's first annual
Celebration of Christmas concert, which was planned with Anne Arundel
Medical Center 's new Oncology Unit. Co-beneficiaries of subsequent
holiday celebrations have been Pathways, an adolescent drug treatment
center; Annapolis Youth Services; and the historic Hammond-Harwood
House. Also in 1989, the Chorale began giving an annual Christmas
concert in Baltimore in support of the Beans and Bread Soup Kitchen,
which provides food for the homeless in the Fells Point area. These
concerts have raised nearly $100,000 over the years.
In
1999 and 2000, the holiday illuminations of "Lights on the
Bay" in Annapolis were given an extra touch of magic by the
Chorale's recording of Christmas favorites. The Chorale has also
appeared with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and made a whistle-stop
appearance at the Railroad Museum in Chesapeake Beach , both annual
fundraising events.
So,
what does the community have to say about the chorale's dedication
to sharing music? Plenty. In addition to corporate citizens like
BGE and AT&T becoming supporters of the chorale, many individuals
have made generous gifts that keep the music coming each year.
Here
are a few testimonials as to what the chorale adds to a community:
"It
was a joy to listen to the chorale members and pleasure to have
Mr. Green speak to us. The program was a wonderful way to kick off
the holiday season, as well as an opportunity to introduce our membership
to the Annapolis Chorale."
